This Certification Policy sets out how the American Society for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (“ASEEE”) certifies the competence of candidates who complete ASEEE programs. It applies to all candidates, approved training centers, instructors, and assessors involved in ASEEE certification.
Principles
- Competence-based. Certificates confirm demonstrated competence against defined criteria, not attendance alone.
- Impartial. Certification decisions are based on objective evidence and are free from conflicts of interest.
- Consistent. The same criteria apply to every candidate in a program, wherever it is delivered.
- Verifiable. Every certificate can be confirmed online.
- Fair. Candidates have access to reasonable accommodations, feedback, and appeals.
Eligibility
To be eligible for certification, a candidate must:
- Meet the prerequisites published for the program, which may include prior qualifications, documented experience, or completion of a lower-level program
- Complete the program with an ASEEE-approved training center authorized for that program
- Meet the attendance and participation requirements of the program
- Provide accurate identity information
- Agree to abide by the ASEEE Code of Ethics
Assessment
Each program defines its assessment methods, which may include:
- Written or computer-based knowledge assessments
- Practical assessments in which candidates perform tasks under observation
- Oral questioning and review of work products or documentation
Assessments are conducted by qualified assessors under controlled conditions. Candidates must not use unauthorized materials, receive unauthorized assistance, or misrepresent their identity. Assessors record evidence and outcomes against the published criteria.
Reasonable accommodations
Candidates who need an accommodation because of a disability or other circumstance should request it from the training center before the assessment. Accommodations are designed to remove barriers without changing the competency being assessed.
Results and reassessment
Candidates who do not meet the criteria are informed of the areas requiring improvement and the reassessment options available for the program.
Certification Decision and Issuance
Assessment results submitted by approved training centers are reviewed before a certificate is issued. ASEEE may request additional evidence or decline to issue a certificate where records are incomplete or irregular. Certificates are issued in the candidate’s name and identify the program, the issue date, and, where applicable, the recommended validity period.
Unique ID and Online Verification
Every ASEEE certificate carries a unique certificate ID. Anyone can confirm a certificate through Certificate Check at aseee.org/verify. Training centers can be verified through Center Check at aseee.org/verify. The online record is the authoritative source of a certificate’s status. A printed or digital copy that conflicts with the online record should not be relied upon.
Validity and Recertification
For most competency programs, ASEEE recommends recertification every three years. Some programs may specify a different period based on the nature of the competency and changes in the relevant codes and standards. Recertification may require a refresher program, reassessment, evidence of continued practice, or a combination of these. Certificate holders are responsible for tracking their recertification dates.
Use of Certificates
Certificate holders may refer to their certification accurately and only for the program and period for which it was issued. A certificate confirms competence demonstrated at the time of assessment. It does not by itself authorize a person to perform work at a particular site; authorization remains the responsibility of the employer under applicable regulations and site rules.
Suspension and Revocation
ASEEE may suspend or revoke a certificate where there is evidence of:
- Cheating, impersonation, or other assessment misconduct
- Falsified or misleading information in an application
- Alteration, forgery, or misuse of a certificate or certificate ID
- Serious breaches of the Code of Ethics
- Irregularities in delivery or assessment by a training center that undermine the validity of results
Before a final decision, the certificate holder will normally be informed of the concern and given an opportunity to respond. Suspended or revoked certificates are shown accordingly in online verification.
Appeals
Candidates and certificate holders may appeal assessment outcomes or certification decisions. Appeals are handled impartially by people who were not involved in the original decision, in accordance with our Complaints & Appeals Policy.
Records and Confidentiality
ASEEE and approved training centers maintain certification records securely and use them in accordance with our Privacy Policy. Assessment materials are confidential and may not be copied or shared.
