How Grades Work
ASEEE membership is structured in grades. Each grade reflects a level of education, practical experience and professional responsibility. The criteria below describe what is typical for each grade. They are guidance, not a rigid formula: ASEEE reviews each application individually, weighs the full picture of an applicant’s background and may request further evidence before reaching a decision.
If you are unsure which grade fits, choose the one that best matches your current position. The membership office may recommend a different grade after review.
Student Member
Who it is for: Students currently enrolled in an engineering, engineering technology, vocational or technical program related to electrical, instrumentation & control or electronics work.
Typical eligibility: Active enrollment in a recognized educational institution or training program. No professional experience is required.
What to submit:
- A current student ID or proof of enrollment
- A short CV or summary of studies
Student Members are encouraged to apply for transfer to Associate Member when they complete their studies.
Associate Member
Who it is for: Early-career technicians and engineers, recent graduates, and professionals entering the field from a related discipline.
Typical eligibility: A vocational or technical certificate, diploma or degree in a relevant field, typically with up to around three years of practical experience. Holders of competency-based certificates from ASEEE-approved programs are well placed to apply at this grade.
What to submit:
- A current CV
- Copies of qualifications and any training certificates
Member
Who it is for: Qualified practitioners who apply technical knowledge independently in design, installation, operation, testing, inspection or maintenance.
Typical eligibility: A relevant degree or diploma, typically with three or more years of professional experience. Applicants with vocational qualifications and a longer record of responsible practice are also considered.
What to submit:
- A current CV describing roles and responsibilities
- Copies of qualifications and certificates
- Proof of current or recent employment, such as an employer letter
Senior Member
Who it is for: Experienced professionals who lead work, supervise teams, manage projects or hold technical authority within their organizations.
Typical eligibility: Typically ten or more years of professional experience, including a substantial period in positions of significant responsibility. Evidence of leadership, specialist expertise or contribution to the profession strengthens an application.
What to submit:
- A detailed CV highlighting responsibility and leadership
- Copies of qualifications and certificates
- Proof of employment and position held
- Optionally, a reference from a supervisor or senior colleague
Fellow
Who it is for: Distinguished professionals whose work has had a recognized impact on electrical, instrumentation & control or electronics practice.
How it is conferred: Fellow is the society’s highest individual grade and is not open to direct application. It is conferred by invitation or following nomination. Candidates are generally established Senior Members with an extended record of technical achievement, leadership or service. Nominations are reviewed by ASEEE on the merits of the evidence presented.

Corporate Member
Who it is for: Companies and organizations that employ, train or develop technical personnel in the disciplines ASEEE serves, and that want a formal relationship with the society.
Typical eligibility: A legally registered organization with activities in a relevant engineering, industrial, utility, contracting or service sector.
What to submit:
- Organization name and a named contact person
- Proof of registration, such as a business or trade license
- A short company profile describing activities and technical workforce
Training Center Partner
Who it is for: Training providers that wish to deliver ASEEE-accredited, competency-based programs.
Typical eligibility: A registered training organization with suitable facilities, equipment and qualified instructors for the programs it intends to deliver. Approval follows a review of the center’s capability and its commitment to ASEEE quality requirements.
What to submit:
- Proof of registration or licensing
- A center profile, including facilities and equipment
- Instructor CVs and qualifications
- The program areas the center proposes to deliver

Moving Between Grades
Grades are designed to follow a career. As your experience and responsibility grow, you may apply to transfer to a higher grade. A transfer application follows the same route as a new application: submit the application form, select the grade you are now seeking and be ready to provide updated evidence, such as a revised CV and proof of your current position.
Experience is assessed on substance, not only duration. Years in the field matter, but so do the complexity of the work, the level of independence and the degree of responsibility for safety, quality and people. Competency-based certificates from ASEEE-approved programs can help demonstrate capability in a specific discipline and are taken into account as part of the overall review.
Review and Further Evidence
Every application is assessed on its own merits. ASEEE may ask for additional documents, clarification of experience or confirmation from an employer before deciding. Applications that do not meet the criteria for the requested grade may be offered a different grade.
