Program Overview
Electrical panels fail from the outside in as often as from the inside out. Water ingress, dust, corroded gland plates and loose connections cause tracking, overheating and arc faults that no protection relay can fully prevent. Systematic panel inspection, combined with an understanding of what an Ingress Protection rating really guarantees, is a frontline reliability and safety control.
This program trains inspectors to evaluate HV, MV and LV panels and distribution boards in a structured way. Participants learn to verify enclosure integrity, segregation, earthing and bonding, terminations and torque, labeling and interlocks, and to assess IP ratings in accordance with IEC 60529, including what the first and second characteristic numerals test and how site modifications can invalidate them. Assembly requirements from IEC 61439 for LV and IEC 62271-200 for MV switchgear provide the benchmark. The course closes with defect classification and technical reporting.
Learning Outcomes
- Explain the IEC 60529 IP code, its test methods and the meaning of each numeral and letter
- Inspect HV, MV and LV panels and distribution boards using a structured checklist
- Verify electrical connections, earthing, segregation and interlocks for safety compliance
- Evaluate whether an installed enclosure still meets its declared IP rating
- Identify, classify and prioritize defects by risk
- Prepare clear technical inspection reports with evidence and recommendations
Program Modules
- Inspection of Electrical Panels and Distribution Boards — inspection planning, safe access and structured checklists for HV, MV and LV assemblies

Assessment & Certification
Assessment combines a written examination on IEC 60529, panel inspection criteria and reporting with a practical assessment in which each participant inspects a set of panels against a checklist, performs an IP verification exercise and submits a technical defect report. Practical sessions take place at ASEEE-approved training centers, using calibrated equipment and realistic work scenarios under the supervision of a qualified assessor.
Participants who meet the competency criteria receive an ASEEE competency certificate carrying a unique certificate ID that employers and clients can verify online through Certificate Check. ASEEE recommends recertification every 3 years to keep skills aligned with current practice and revised standards.
