Program Overview
Electrical equipment is one of the most common ignition sources in a flammable atmosphere. This program gives electrical and instrument technicians the knowledge and hands-on discipline to work safely and compliantly in classified locations, covering gas, vapor and combustible dust hazards. It follows the structure of the internationally recognized Ex01–Ex04 competency units and is built around the IEC 60079 series.
Participants move from the physics of ignition and the logic of protection concepts to real installation and inspection work: selecting cable glands, terminating Ex e and Ex d enclosures, verifying intrinsically safe loops and documenting findings. Emphasis is placed on reading Ex marking and certificates correctly, recognizing special conditions of use and applying the detailed, close and visual inspection grades defined in IEC 60079-17.
Learning Outcomes
- Explain the fire triangle, ignition sources, temperature classes and gas groups as they relate to apparatus protection
- Interpret Ex marking, EPL designations, IP codes and certificate conditions, including X and U suffixes
- Select and install Ex d, Ex e, Ex i, Ex p, Ex n, Ex m, Ex o, Ex q and Ex s equipment for a given zone
- Terminate cables and fit barrier and compound glands in accordance with IEC 60079-14
- Perform visual, close and detailed inspections and record defects to IEC 60079-17
- Apply permit-to-work and safe isolation principles before intervening on Ex equipment

- Inspection and Maintenance — inspection grades and types, defect categorization and maintenance practice to IEC 60079-17

Assessment & Certification
Competence is confirmed through a written examination covering protection concepts, marking and inspection requirements and a practical assessment on installation and inspection rigs representing Ex d, Ex e and Ex i equipment. Practical sessions take place at ASEEE-approved training centers under the supervision of a qualified assessor.
Successful candidates receive the ASEEE competency certificate, which carries a unique ID that employers and clients can verify online through Certificate Check. Because Ex competence depends on current practice and evolving editions of IEC 60079, recertification is recommended every 5 years.
