The American Society for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (“ASEEE”) is committed to equal opportunity and to an environment free from discrimination and harassment. We believe that a strong engineering workforce depends on fair access to education, assessment, and professional recognition for every qualified person.
Policy Statement
ASEEE does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, creed, sex, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, ancestry, age, disability, genetic information, marital or familial status, military or veteran status, citizenship status where protected, or any other characteristic protected by applicable federal, state, or local law.
This commitment is consistent with the principles of federal civil rights laws, including Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, as well as applicable New York State and New York City laws.
Scope
This policy applies to:
- Program enrollment, delivery, and participation
- Assessment, certification, recertification, and appeals
- Approval and oversight of training centers
- Recruitment, hiring, compensation, promotion, and all other terms of employment at ASEEE
- Selection of instructors, assessors, volunteers, and contractors
- Events, communications, and online services
Fair Assessment
Certification decisions are based solely on evidence of competence measured against published criteria. Assessors are expected to apply criteria consistently, to avoid bias, and to declare any conflict of interest. Prerequisites are set only where they are relevant to the competency being certified.
Reasonable Accommodations
ASEEE provides reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities and for sincerely held religious beliefs, unless doing so would cause undue hardship or fundamentally alter the competency being assessed. Candidates should request accommodations from their training center before the program begins. Employees and job applicants may request accommodations by contacting ASEEE.
Harassment
Harassment based on any protected characteristic is prohibited. Harassment includes unwelcome conduct, whether verbal, physical, written, or electronic, that creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment or that affects a person’s participation, assessment, or employment. Sexual harassment, including unwelcome advances and requests for sexual favors, is strictly prohibited.
Expectations of Training Centers
As a condition of approval, ASEEE-approved training centers must:
- Apply non-discriminatory practices in enrollment, delivery, and assessment
- Provide reasonable accommodations in coordination with candidates
- Maintain procedures to receive and address complaints of discrimination or harassment
- Cooperate with ASEEE in any review of a complaint
Failure to meet these expectations may lead to corrective action, suspension, or withdrawal of approval.
Reporting Concerns
Anyone who believes they have experienced or witnessed discrimination or harassment connected with ASEEE programs, certification, or employment is encouraged to report it to [email protected]. Reports may also be made to the relevant training center. Concerns are handled promptly, impartially, and as confidentially as possible under our Complaints & Appeals Policy.
Individuals may also have the right to file a complaint with government agencies such as the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission or the New York State Division of Human Rights.
Non-Retaliation
ASEEE prohibits retaliation against anyone who reports a concern in good faith, files a complaint, or participates in an investigation. Retaliation is itself a violation of this policy.
Consequences
Violations of this policy may result in corrective or disciplinary action, which may include training, suspension or revocation of certification, withdrawal of training center approval, or termination of employment or contracts, as appropriate.
Review
This policy is reviewed periodically to ensure it remains effective and consistent with applicable law. Questions about this policy, or suggestions for improving equal access to our programs, are always welcome.
